Sorry that I’ve been MIA lately. School has really picked up- but I promise that I’m back! For now, here’s a quick post:
This post goes out to many seniors (and college students in general) looking for that “edge” to market themselves to companies. I highly recommend the text “Confessions of a Recruiting Director” by Brad Karsh.
While I was interning at McCann Erickson this past summer, a fellow co-worker suggested the book to me. Within days it was being shipped from Amazon.

Brad does an AMAZING job at resume organization. I really appreciated it because most of the book focuses from a Communication Arts standpoint. I feel that most resume books really keep you “in the lines.” But Brad says “your resume is your life in 15 seconds.” So how are you going to market yourself in 15 seconds on that piece of paper? Of course he breaks down the Cover Letter as the “teaser” for your resume, as well as how to properly network. He really tells it how it is- as he is a recruiting director for Leo Burnett. Karsh then explains proper etiquette for the interview- you never get a second chance to make a first impression- PLUS tips on Thank-You Notes and Sealing the Deal for the job.
The delivery of “Shocking Career Confessions” make the book a quick read too! SHOCKING INTERVIEW QUESTION #1: Recruiting Directors actually want you to do well.
I have shaped a lot of my personal resume off of this book- as well as cover letters. I landed another internship this semester, and I thank this book for a large part in that.
